  5. whose prescience and persistence saved from oblivion the work
  6. of a generation of Soviet avant-garde painters; in Athens.
  7. Starting in the 1940s, when authorities were reviling such
  8. artists as Chagall, Kandinsky, Rodchenko and Malevich as
  9. decadent, Costakis managed to acquire a vast collection of
  10. their works. He immigrated to Greece in 1978, leaving most of
  11. his paintings behind in Moscow.
